Flavio Tiago Couto, PhD

Dr. Couto has interests in meteorology and climatology, in particular in atmospheric modelling of extreme weather phenomena and fire meteorology. In 2010, he received a Bachelor's degree in Meteorology from the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel; Brazil), receiving honourable mention for the first place of the class 2010/1 in Meteorology. Subsequently he undertook a Master's degree in Earth, Atmospheric and Space Sciences (Atmospheric Physics and Climate) from the University of Évora (Évora, Portugal), graduating in 2011. In 2016, he obtained his European PhD in Earth and Space Sciences (Atmospheric Physics and Climate) at the University of Évora, with international mobility at the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM, Météo-France; Toulouse, France). Currently, he is a researcher at University of Évora and was the Principal Investigator of the PyroC.pt (Advanced wildfire modelling for risk assessment and pyroconvection understanding in Portugal) project. He also contributes in the FIREPOCTEP+ project and participated in CILIFO (cilifo.eu; 2019-2023) and FIREPOCTEP (firepoctep.eu; 2021-2023) projects developing research in the forest fires context. In 2022 and 2023, he was at the University of Corsica (Corte, Corsica, France) carrying out coupled fire-atmosphere simulations using an atmospheric model (MesoNH) and a fire propagation model (ForeFire). He is author or co-author of 27 articles published in international scientific journals. The articles as the main author, a total of 12, cover topics related to atmospheric modelling, namely pyro-convection and the prevailing weather conditions affecting fire behaviour, dry thunderstorm electrification, emission and transport of mineral dust, heavy orographic precipitation and extreme weather phenomena. His bibliographic production is also composed of 2 conference articles, 130 conference abstracts with two works being awarded, 1 book chapter, two conference book (co-author) and 7 reports. He has participated in several scientific meetings in some countries, 10 of them in the organization committee. In the last years, also participated in 6 selection committees (3 as president). He currently supervises 3 doctoral theses, and has already completed the supervision of 1 doctoral thesis, 2 master's dissertations and 2 scientific initiation scholarships.
